Two Questions I Keep Getting. Here Are the Honest Answers.

Since launching StartHere.care, two questions come up more than any others: does the platform use AI, and how does it make money? They're both fair questions and they deserve a straight answer, not a FAQ blurb, but a real one.

No AI wrote your bio. No AI matched you.

When you complete your profile on StartHere.care, your responses feed directly into an algorithm that organizes and reflects what you told me. Think of it less like a language model and more like a structured personality assessment. The words and ideas in your profile come from you. The system shapes them into a readable format based on your answers. That's it.

No generative AI. No language model filling in gaps or inventing language on your behalf. There is nothing to "turn off" because it was never part of the build.

I understand why this matters. You've spent years developing a clinical voice and a professional identity. The last thing you need is a machine approximating it.

Matching works the same way. Match strength is a score derived from how your responses align with a client's needs across defined criteria: specialty, approach, availability, and other factors you've indicated. The algorithm doesn't interpret or infer. It compares. There is no AI making judgment calls about therapeutic fit. That judgment belongs to you and your client.

It's free because it was built to be free.

Tired of paying for referrals that don't convert?

StartHere.care sends you clients matched on fit — not just zip code. No listing fees. No per-lead charges. No catch.

See How It Works

I'm an ex-credit union CEO. I stopped working at the end of last year, and while I was navigating a difficult stretch personally, I built StartHere.care. My goal was to put something together that might prevent others from going through what I did.

StartHere.care doesn't make money. That's not a gap in the business plan. That's the point.

The for-profit platforms take a cut of something therapists can do themselves. They charge for visibility, optimize for volume, and answer to investors. I built StartHere.care because I got tired of watching the wrong people profit from a crisis. The mental health crisis in this country is real. Therapists have the skills and the capacity. What's broken is the connection, and that's a solvable problem that doesn't require charging anyone to fix.

Right now I cover monthly hosting costs out of pocket because the problem is worth solving. No investors. No revenue targets. No monetization strategy to explain to anyone.

If the platform grows to a point where that model strains, I'll manage it the lean way first by pruning inactive accounts and keeping things tight. If it ever came to it, I'd explore voluntary donations before anything else. There's no plan to charge. There's no hidden tier coming. If that ever changes in any meaningful way, I'll say so directly.

Why any of this matters.

Empathy is not a feature. It's the work. StartHere.care exists to get the right people in the same room, or the same video call, faster. I'm not trying to replicate the therapeutic relationship or monetize the matching process. I'm trying to remove the friction that keeps it from starting.

That's a task algorithms can handle. The rest is yours.
